Description

Gem Cameo Proof 1898 Half Eagle

1898 $5 PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS. Despite the relative availability of business strikes, proofs of this date are quite rare. Only 75 were originally produced, and of that number Breen estimates that today perhaps as few as 25 may still exist in all grades. This is a stunning, two-toned cameo. The fields go "black" and contrast heavily against the thick mint frost on the devices. As an identifier, a tiny right angle shaped lintmark is seen to the right of the last 8 of the date. Exceptional eye appeal and one of the finest examples known of this issue in the proof format.
