Description

1879-S Morgan Dollar, MS65
Reverse of 1878, Only a Few Finer

1879-S $1 Reverse of 1878 MS65 PCGS. A wisp of almond-gold toning graces the dazzling surfaces of this intricately struck Morgan. Rich, frosty luster contrasts starkly with semireflective fields to produce an engaging cartwheel effect. The 1879-S is common with a Third Reverse and is plentiful through Premium Gem condition. Second Reverse examples (the 1878 reverse), however, become conditionally scarce over MS64, and PCGS reports only two numerically finer than this remarkable Gem (9/25). This piece fits well into type collections and, as finer pieces are so rare, it could also be considered for Registry sets.
