Description

1935-D 50C Texas Half Dollar With "Colonel" E.H.R. Green Gold-Foil Presentation Box, MS65 PCGS. The coin is housed in an old green generation 3.0 green label holder, with original russet-amber border toning around ivory-white interiors. The obverse fields are distinctly semiprooflike, the reverse fields mostly of normal appearance with softly frosted luster. The strike is impeccably sharp.

The PCGS slab is housed in a custom screw-type holder alongside a green velvet-lined gold-foil presentation box inscribed under the lid: The Texas Independence Centennial Compliments of E.H.R. Green. The early Swiatek-Breen commemorative reference (1981) called these pieces proof-like presentation strikings from brilliantly polished dies. The more recent Swiatek Encyclopedia (2012), notes:
"Fifty gold foil presentation boxes with green velour interiors, housed only the early-struck, proof-like 1935 Denver strikings. (Should any other Texas issue be found in such a box, it was replaced.) The inner top cover is imprinted in black: 'The Texas Independence Centennial, Compliments of E.H.R. Green' ... Green also presented 50 three-piece sets in silver foil boxes with a black velour interior."

While the present coin is designated a regular striking by PCGS, its early die state production in accordance with the coins housed in the Green boxes is readily apparent.
