Description

1857 Half Dime, MS65
Early NGC Holder With CAC Approval

1857 H10C MS65 NGC. CAC. V-2. Speckled olive toning overlies the golden-gray surfaces of this Gem half dime. Areas of underlying mint brilliance further the appeal. The reverse toning of this CAC-approved example is similar, if a touch lighter in shade. Housed in an NGC no-line fatty holder.

Variety: V-2. The date is slightly high in the field, with the 1 closest to the base.

Population Data (8/15): NGC and PCGS respectively report 68 and 45 in higher grades.

Heritage Commentary: The Mint experimented with digit punches during this era. The 1857 half dimes feature both open and close-looped 5s, while the 1856 gold dollar exhibited both slant and upright 5s. Additionally, the upper flag of 5 on the 1857 half dime is more curved than that of the previous year.
