Elusive Near-Gem 1873-CC Trade Dollar
With 'Wide CC' Mintmark

1873-CC T$1 MS64 NGC. Wide CC, "rare" per Bowers-Borckardt. Rusty Goe piquantly writes in The Mint on Carson Street of the Trade dollar, "What an interesting topic trade dollars are. ... These enigmatic coins were conceived around 1870, introduced in 1873, aborted in 1878, and issued as Proofs through 1885, at which time they were given their last rites."
Of course, the date 1873 is a numismatically fascinating one, as "Mr. 1873" Harry X Boosel would attest, and the combination with the vaunted CC mintmark on any U.S. coin gives the piece added cachet. In the case of the 1873-CC Trade dollars, the Nevada facility certainly made a good beginning, producing very nearly one-eighth of a million examples in only their fourth year of operation.
However, the vast majority of Trade dollars manufactured, at least in the early years of the series, were put to the use for which they were intended and exported overseas--with most either never returning to domestic shores or returning heavily chopmarked.
The CC mintmarks on these first-year issues were quite small, and three varieties exist for the 1873-CC. Two of those varieties show normally spaced C's, while this example of the third variant, noted as "rare" in the Bowers-Borckardt Silver Dollar Encyclopedia, displays C's that are abnormally far apart, by more than a letter's width.
The 1873-CC Trade dollar is quite elusive in the higher Mint State grades. This near-Gem is one of only four pieces so certified at NGC, and there is a single MS65 finer at that service. A similar situation appears at PCGS, with four MS64s and a single MS65 there (9/08).
The surfaces have the usual bright mint luster and each side is overlaid with deep rose and blue toning. A bit softly struck on the high points, the only mark of any note is located in the right obverse field behind Liberty's arm.(Registry values: N7079)
