Description

1799/8 Dollar, 13 Stars Reverse, VF30
Appealing B-1, BB-142 Example, Scarce Overdate

1799/8 $1 13 Stars Reverse, B-1, BB-142, R.4, VF30 PCGS. Bowers Die State III, the late die stage normally encountered for the variety. While the obverse survived marriages with three different reverses, this is the only pairing for the BB-142 reverse. Judging by the number of coins that exist in its latest state but the variety's overall scarcity, the die must have cracked early and met its demise soon thereafter. This is a smooth and attractive example. Only tiny marks exist (visible with a loupe), while the devices retain pleasing definition. Deep olive-gray surfaces display glossy appeal.
From The Twelve Oaks Collection.
