Description

1861 Three Dollar Gold, MS60
Strong Eye Appeal

1861 $3 MS60 NGC. A pleasing Mint State example of this low-mintage Philadelphia issue, lacking the overt planchet striations that are often seen for the date. Rather, a few light lines occupy the reflective fields that display pleasing orange-gold coloration. The motifs show a sharp strike on both sides. Perhaps about 100 Uncirculated 1861 three dollar gold pieces survive from the mintage of just 5,959 pieces, according to the Bowers reference. Census: 5 in 60, 64 finer (7/16).
