Extremely Rare 1855-D Large D Five Dollar, MS61
1855-D $5 Large D MS61 NGC. Variety 32-AA, identified according to Douglas Winter in The Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint, 1838-1861 by the upright of the mintmark over the gap between the V and E in FIVE, and away from the stem and well below the feather. The 1855-D is extremely rare in Mint State. Winter estimates four to five extant Uncirculated coins. NGC and PCGS have certified eight specimens, five of which are MS61, and one each in MS62, MS63, and MS64.
The yellow-gold surfaces of this MS61 example display relatively well struck design elements, save for softness on the eagle's neck feathers, this being typical for the issue. The most potent luster resides in the recesses, and each side reveals a more or less equal distribution of light to moderate contact marks. This may well be considered a special offering, as one seeking a Mint State example is unlikely to locate one finer!(Registry values: P3)
