Description

Exceptional 1877-CC Five Dollar, AU55

1877-CC $5 AU55 PCGS. The low-mintage 1877-CC (8,680 pieces), is scarce in all grades. When available, it usually grades Very Fine to Extremely Fine. About Uncirculated examples are rare, and just a couple of Mint State pieces are known.
Rich reddish-gold patination, imbued with wisps of lilac and sky-blue, adorns both sides of the Choice AU coin in this lot. The design features are nicely defined, better so that often seen on this issue, save for minor softness in the hair bun and eagle's neck feathers. A good amount of luster resides in the areas around, and in the recesses of, the motifs. This coin possesses attractive surfaces, unlike typically seen examples alluded to by Douglas Winter (2001) that are" very heavily abraded" or "... hairlined or unnaturally bright from numismatic abuse."(Registry values: P3)
