Description

1849-D Gold Dollar, AU50
First Date of Issue

1849-D G$1 AU50 PCGS. Variety 1-A, with the mintmark positioned to the left. Celebrated as the first-date-of-issue D-mint gold dollar, the 1849-D enjoyed a large mintage of 21,588 pieces. A number of coins were saved as souvenirs, making the issue quite available today, in the context of the series. An estimated 250-300+ examples are known today in all grades, with 85-95 specimens in AU. The present coin is well struck for a D-mint issue, with the typical weakness noted on the curls below LIBERTY. A crack from Liberty's nose into the obverse field is the only mark of note.
