BEAUTIFUL CHAIN AMERICA

1793 S-3 R3- Chain AMERICA AU55 PCGS, CAC Approved. Attractive glossy chocolate brown. Smooth with a bold strike and just a touch of friction on the devices. No corrosion but there are a few minor contact marks on the obverse. The notable marks are a scratch before the bottom of the neck, several tiny hairline scratches on the forehead, and a diagonal hairline in the hair left of the ear. The reverse is choice, nearly flawless, and has flowline luster in protected areas. Late die state with strong die clashmarks under the truncation and obvious swelling along the bottom of UNIT. Graded EF45 and tied for CC#6 in the Bland census. Noyes says net EF40 and tied for CC#11, his photo #62341. This cataloger's EAC grade is EF45. A beautiful example of the Chain AMERICA type. The attribution and Husak Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. PCGS population 2; 1 finer in 62. 35438.55/22040897.

Stack's sold the Dr. E. Yale Clarke Collection in October 1975. Based on provenance information in that catalog, Clarke was active in the 1960s. His collection is known for exceptional large cents, an extensive collection of three-dollar gold coins, and an important collection of half dollars that included the 1838-O and the 1853-O No Arrows coins. Dr. Clarke, from Glen Falls, New York, applied for ANA membership in 1948, and a notice of his death appeared in the February 1980 issue of The Numismatist. Elisha Yale Clarke, the son of Dr. Henry Elisha Clarke and Myra Josephine Martin, was born in Glen Falls, New York on March 11, 1914, and died there on December 10, 1979. He married Aileen Chadwick in 1942 and she recently passed away in 2017 at the age of 103.
