Description

Boiotia, Thebes. Ca. 395-338 B.C. AR stater (21 mm, 12.18 g). Ca. 363-338 B.C. Werg..., magistrate. Boiotian shield / Amphora. Hepworth group D3, 40 = BCD 575 (same dies); Head p. 65; SNG Copenhagen 331. Good VF, toned, obverse planchet flaws.

A very rare issue according to Hepworth, with fewer than twenty specimens known. The magistrate's name, as written on this coin, employs the use of the archaic Greek letter Fau or Digamma as the first consonant. The Digamma derives from the Phoenician letter Waw, which in turn gave rise to the Roman letter F.
