1793 S-6 Wreath Cent, AU53
Small LIBERTY

1793 1C S-6 R3 Wreath Cent, Vine & Bars Edge, Small LIBERTY, AU53 PCGS. Glossy tan and medium brown delicately mottled with subtle puffs of darker chocolate brown toning on the obverse, mostly in the field behind the portrait. Slightly darker steel brown toning covers the highpoints of the devices and hints of mint frost can be found in protected areas on the reverse. Sharply struck with smooth surfaces and excellent eye appeal. The only notable contact mark is a fine nearly horizontal scratch from the ear lobe through the hair into the field between two strands of hair. The scratch is mostly hidden in the hair details and has minimal effect on the eye appeal. The planchet is choice except for a microscopic planchet fissure that meanders from the bottom of the I in LIBERTY into the hair ending just left of the temple (as struck). The obverse is positioned very slightly off center to the right leaving some of the border beads tight to the edge of the planchet. MDS, Breen state III. The bulge in the field behind the portrait reaches the jaw and there is a faint bulge into the field from the lower lip. Graded net VF35 and tied for CC#13 in the Noyes census, his photo #29705. This cataloger's EAC grade is net EF40. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label (35450.53/38085770).

The Stack's Americana Sale of January 15-17, 2002, featuring Selections from the Hain Family Collection, was a landmark event that drew wide attention for its concentration of important colonial and early federal coinage. The centerpiece was the Hain Family's famous holdings of Massachusetts silver coinage, one of the most significant groups ever offered at public auction. With dozens of examples across all types and varieties-many of them pedigreed to Crosby, Parmelee, Garrett, Picker, and other great cabinets-the collection realized six-figure prices for multiple pieces, led by a superb NE shilling and several "Pine Tree" and "Oak Tree" types in exceptional condition. Stack's presentation emphasized the historical importance of these coins as the foundation of American numismatics, and prices realized confirmed their rarity and desirability.

Beyond the Massachusetts silver, the sale offered a wide spectrum of early American issues, including colonial coppers, Washington pieces, and early federal half cents and large cents. Copper collectors found notable highlights among rare die varieties, high-grade Liberty Caps, and pedigreed examples of 1793-1794 cents, cataloged with careful attribution and historical commentary. Federal coinage extended through silver and gold types, complemented by medals, ingots, and related Americana, creating a diverse sale that appealed across specialties. With its combination of world-class Massachusetts silver and strong representation of early American copper, Stack's 2002 Hain Family Collection, cemented its place as a defining reference auction for colonial and early federal specialists.
