1794 HEAD OF 1793 CENT, AU50
THE FINEST GRADED S-20B

1794 S-20b R4+ Head of 1793, Edge of 1794, AU50 PCGS. Glossy chocolate and steel brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints and frosty lighter brown and tan in protected areas on both sides. There is a tiny spot of darker reddish olive brown toning on the nose near the eye plus larger but more subtle splashes of similar reddish chocolate brown toning on the reverse, especially at the end of the left ribbon. The surfaces are smooth and nearly void of contact marks, and the eye appeal is excellent. The only notable sign of contact is a tiny rim bruise left of the bottom of the cap. Late die state, Heck die state 2, Breen state II, with a faint wave in the field from the chin to the rim at right and clashmarks at the E in LIBERTY. This is an outstanding example of a rare and very popular die variety, and it is arguably the finest example known outside of the American Numismatic Society (ANS) collection. Bill Noyes called this piece VF30 (Noyes photo #22590) and had it tied for CC#2 honors with one other piece behind the ANS example. He recently revised his grade to net F15 and CC#10 based on an unflattering photo. Bland says VF25 and tied for CC#4 in his census. This cataloger's EAC grade is VF25. Admittedly the 1794 Head of 1793 cents are a challenge to grade because there is very little if any detail in the hair. This cent was called EF45 by PCGS in an earlier assessment, but upon further review they have raised their grade to the currently assigned AU50. Noyes plated this example in his 2006 book on the series (where he graded it VF30), and Samuel Hudson Chapman used this piece to illustrate the obverse die in his 1923 monograph The United States Cents of the Year 1794. This important cent comes with a long, very impressive provenance that includes many of the "heavyweights" of 1794 cent collectors. The attribution and Husak Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. PCGS population 1; none finer. 35522.50/18024839.

Early American Coppers charter member #79, Charles Douglas Smith was born on June 17, 1914, and died on September 20, 1999. Residing in Brooklyn, New York, he was employed in the railroad business until his retirement in 1981. An avid large cent collector whose interest began in 1947, Smith followed the guidance of Homer K. Downing and Dr. William H. Sheldon, forming several collections over many years. He is remembered for his belief that a collector can appreciate a coin only after he had owned it three times. He provided cataloging assistance to Stack's for several important sales from the 1950s through the 1980s, including the Floyd Starr Collection in 1984. Smith discovered the 1794 NC-4 and 1801 NC-3 varieties.
