Description
1794 HEAD OF 1794 CENT, MS65+ BROWN
THE FINEST GRADED S-21
1794 S-21 R3 MS65+ Brown PCGS. Lustrous medium brown with
peeps of faded mint red in protected areas on both sides. Satiny
mint frost covers this cent and the eye appeal is superb. Sharply
struck on a high-quality planchet that shows just a few microscopic
pre-striking chips in the fields near the dentils. The only notable
marks, and they are trivial, are a speck of fine carbon on the jaw,
a few ticks on the end of the pole, and another in the field off
the lower curls. E-MDS, Heck die state 2.5, Breen state III, with a
die crack through the B arcing into the cap and fine clashmarks
between the cap and hair. The fine horizontal crack from the
dentils to the bottom of the cap has not formed. The repunching at
the base of the L is clear and fine die rust shows below the cap
and on much of the reverse (tiny lumps on the coin). This is the
plate coin for the variety in the 1991 Noyes reference. Graded MS62
Choice and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #21844. Bland says
MS61 and CC#1. Both census takers report only 2 mint state examples
according to the strict EAC grading standards. This cataloger's EAC
grade is MS62. Comes with another very nice provenance--as you
would expect for such a beautiful cent. The attribution is noted on
the PCGS Gold Shield label. PCGS population 1; none finer.

A cardiologist in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Dr. Thomas Turissini began collecting coins when he was six years old. His interest in large cents began in 1991 after he purchased a copy of Penny Whimsy. Today, he collects high quality 1794 cents. Tom shared his own thoughts about Walter Husak:
"I met Walter in the summer of 1995 at the Anaheim ANA Convention. Unbeknownst to me at the time, we were both fascinated with 1794 large cents and were competing for a very nice gem S-26 1794 variety in the Heritage Auction. I managed to win the lot, and shortly after the auction Tony Terranova introduced me to Walter. After talking to him for a few minutes, I had the feeling that I had known him my entire life. We soon became close friends and subsequently shared a table at the yearly EAC conventions for over 20 years. Soon after Walter's epic 2008 sale of his early date large cents, he began collecting once again and I sold him several of my better 1794 cents. He loved these little Rembrandt's like no other person I have ever met. Over the years, we shared many wonderful times including dinners with wife Patricia and daughter Trina. I was completely unprepared for his passing as he was such a vibrant person. I greatly miss Walter and always will. His enthusiasm for early copper was infectious. It will be very difficult for me to attend any future EAC conventions as it would just not be the same without his smiling countenance at our table. I feel very fortunate in having Walter as a dear friend for the better part of 27 years."
