Description
1794 HEAD OF 1794 CENT, MS63 BROWN
THE NAFTZGER-BENNETT S-22
1794 S-22 R1 MS63 Brown PCGS. Lustrous dark steel brown and
chocolate with frosty lighter brown faded down from mint color in
protected areas. No defects other than a tick on the chin and a few
of the usual microscopic planchet flakes scattered about both
sides, most notably at the O in OF. A cent with great eye appeal;
just a touch of rub on the highest points of the devices from mint
state. Scarce EDS, Heck die state 1, Breen state I, before the
usually seen "mounds" formed on the reverse as a result of die
sinking and "spalling" (flaking of the die) during use. Called AU55
and tied for CC#1 honors in the Breen/Bland census. Noyes says AU55
and tied for CC#4, his photo #20379. This cataloger's EAC grade is
AU55. The attribution and Holmes-Husak provenance are noted on the
PCGS Gold Shield label. PCGS population 2; 1 finer in 64+.

Dr. Allen Bennett describes himself as a "reclusive physician." An active collector in many different fields, he assembled a remarkable collection of 1794 large cents from 1985 to 2001. He also collects, or has collected, contemporary art, oriental rugs, Conder tokens, and cowry shells. Bennett sold his 1794 cent collection to Walter Husak in 2001. Many of those coins appeared in the first Husak sale, and others are included in the present auction.
