Ex Stuart A. Levine, Bowers & Merena 3/5/1998:118 (EF40, $2200)-COL Steven K. Ellsworth.

The March 1998 Bowers and Merena auction, headlined by the Boys Town Collection and important properties of Charles S. Mamiye, realized nearly $3.8 million overall, with copper providing significant highlights. The large cent section included an extensive offering of early issues from 1793 onward, with Chain, Wreath, and Liberty Cap cents, followed by numerous 1794s in collector grades. Scarce Draped Bust cents of the late 1790s and early 1800s, including several overdates, gave specialists opportunities to secure seldom-seen varieties. These were cataloged with attention to condition, die state, and rarity, maintaining the Bowers and Merena tradition of detailed scholarship.

Half cents were also present, with early dates like 1793 and 1794 represented alongside scarce issues later years. Later copper included Mint State and proof large cents of the middle and late 19th century, appealing to variety and condition specialists alike. While the sale is remembered for record-setting prices across many series, the copper portion demonstrated both strength and balance, ensuring the Boys Town and Mamiye properties held an enduring place in the literature of early American copper auctions.
