Description
Choice 1909-D Five Dollar
Elusive Dropped Letter Mint Error
1909-D $5 MS64 PCGS. This Choice gold type coin is notable
for exhibiting a dropped letter, in the shape of the mintmark,
located above the eagle's left (facing) shoulder. The dropped
letter is a rare mint error for most series, although the error
occurs more often than usual (in percentage terms) on Indian half
eagles. This is because most of the design was raised on the dies,
with only the mintmark recessed. Grease, like water, seeks its
level and eventually clogs the mintmark, then is dislodged and
struck into the next coin. Other 1909-D half eagles with dropped
mintmark letters were auctioned by Heritage in September 2002 (lot
8256), May 2005 (lot 2618), and July 2006 (lot 1335).(Registry values: N2998)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 28DJ, PCGS# 8514, Greysheet# 9319)
