The October 1983 Kagin's 331st Sale at the Great Eastern Numismatic Association Convention was distinguished by its exceptional offering of large cents, particularly the Santa Monica Collection. This cabinet included a wide range of 18th-century varieties with Condition Census representatives, two proofs, and many coins that had been off the market for a generation. The catalog opened with 1793 Chain and Wreath cents in collectible condition, followed by notable Liberty Cap cents and an extraordinary run of 1794s encompassing rare Sheldon varieties such as the "Short Bust," "Fallen 4," and "Five Braided Locks" pieces. Many coins were traced to earlier luminaries like French, Downing, and Naftzger, with pedigrees carefully reconstructed through the expertise of Del Bland. These early cents underscored the scholarly depth of the collection, with coins frequently ranked among the finest known.
The strength of the sale continued through the 1795-1814 period, featuring uncirculated 1795 Lettered Edge and Plain Edge varieties, a scarce 1796 S-90 "Crowded Head" cent, and remarkable Draped Bust and Classic Head cents. Later offerings included high-grade middle and late dates with original surfaces, mint red, and rare proofs, notably an 1823 proof cent and several exceptional 1830s-1840s pieces. The catalog emphasized both rarity and die state study, with numerous coins described as tied for or improving the Sheldon Condition Census. Together, the Santa Monica Collection and other consignments made this sale one of the defining copper events of the 1980s, bridging market excitement with lasting contributions to large cent scholarship.
