Description

Enigmatic Unlisted Alexander Drachm

THRACIAN KINGDOM. Lysimachus (305-281 BC). AR drachm (17mm, 4.28 gm, 11h). NGC AU 5/5 - 4/5. Posthumous issue in the name and types of Alexander III the Great of Macedon, Magnesia, ca. 301-297 BC. Head of Heracles right, wearing lion skin headdress, paws tied before neck / AΛEΞANΔPOY, Zeus seated left on backless throne, right leg drawn back, feet suspended, eagle in outstretched right hand, grounded scepter in left; lion head right above Σ (retrograde) in left field, AΘ monogram below throne. Price -, cf. 1992 (Σ not retrograde, AP monogram below throne).

The lion head and Σ in the left field would lead one to believe this is a Magnesia mint issue, however, the AΘ monogram wasn't employed there. Perhaps a celator from the Sardes mint, where that monogram was used, moved to Magnesia and erroneously engraved it out of habit?
