Description

Tantalizing Gem 1919-S Nickel

1919-S 5C MS65 PCGS. Though David W. Lange, in his The Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels, describes the 1919-S as "notorious for being weakly struck" among other complaints, the present coin offers substantially above-average detail, with the bison's horn fully outlined and only trifling softness visible on the high points. This Gem offers strong eye appeal in other areas as well, with attractive champagne and pale nickel-blue patina over quicksilver surfaces. Minimally marked and highly desirable. NGC and PCGS have graded only four finer examples between them (3/09).
