Description

Charles III "Hartwell" 8 Reales 1781 LM-MI Genuine NGC, Lima mint, KM78, Cal-1048. Salvaged from the "Hartwell" (sunk in 1787 off the Cape Verde Islands).

In the late 18th century, the Hartwell, a vessel of the British East India Company, set sail for China. However during the voyage a large portion of the crew committed mutiny by attempting to seize the treasure on the ship. Captain Edward Fiott decided to change course to Cape Verde to hand over the mutineers to the authorities but ran into the reefs near the Island of Boa Vista. The ship did not survive the damages and sank but all the crew was saved.
