1857 Large Cent, PR64 Brown
Small Date, Proof-Only N-3
1857 1C Small Date PR64 Brown PCGS. N-3, Low R.5. Our EAC Grade
PR55. This proof-only Newcomb variety is an suitable candidate
for proof type collectors in need of a Mature head cent. The strike
is needle-sharp, and the flashy golden-brown fields display lovely
powder-blue and rose tints when the piece is rotated beneath a
light. A small obverse spot is noted at 9 o'clock, and the reverse
rim has a dark and moderately granular area near 10:30. Grellman
writes, "some have the obverse slightly misaligned toward 10
o'clock with a knife rim [most prominent] at 5 o'clock." The
present specimen is among those struck from a misaligned obverse
die.Ex: Milwaukee ANA Signature (Heritage, 8/2007), lot 96.
