Description

1793 S-5, B-6 Wreath Cent, AU58
Large Obverse Letters

1793 1C Wreath, Vine and Bars AU58 NGC. S-5, B-6, R.4. Our EAC Grade XF45. Ex: Mervis Collection. Glossy chocolate-brown on the obverse with splashes of steel-brown on the high points. The reverse is similar and slighter darker in its overall appearance. Scattered surface marks are evident on both sides, failing to detract from the exceptional appearance of this high-grade Wreath cent. A line-like planchet defect below the bust point provides immediate identification of this specimen.

Breen Die State I. This piece appears to be an early die state, although the narrow rim over LIBERTY fails to permit viewing of the border outside the beads.

Commentary. The Large Letters obverse has LIBERTY close to the size appearing on the Chain cents and much larger than on any other Wreath cent obverse. The Sheldon-5 die pair is placed first in the emission sequence for its affinity with the Chain design. Del Bland and Bill Noyes each assign a grade of XF40, Bland listing this piece as tied for 12th finest, and Noyes suggesting it is tied for 11th best. Our XF45 grade would elevate this piece to a ninth place tie in both lists. The unnatural bright orange image of this piece in the Noyes 1793-94 "color book" is entirely unlike its actual lovely chocolate and steel-brown appearance.

Market Notes. For all varieties, NGC has only certified 13 Wreath cents as AU58, and 23 finer Mint State examples. PCGS has certified 18 examples in AU58, and 40 finer pieces. The combined certification data indicates the elusive nature of high-grade Wreath cents. In addition, the Sheldon-5 die pair, with Large Letters on the obverse, is a distinct type issue that enjoys a large audience. This example is the second finest NGC certified S-5 cent.

Provenance. Pierre-Edouard LeGras (Paris); Ed. Frossard (11/1882), lot 145; later, French's, 90th Sale (3/1967), lot 531; C. Douglas Smith; later, Mid-American Rare Coin Auctions (5/1990), lot 9.
