Much of our knowledge about this rather enigmatic Persian royal coinage series comes from the Pixodaros Hoard, which accounts for over half of the known specimens. It was previously believed that this coinage might have been an emergency issue struck in the twilight years of the Persian Empire, but it is now thought that the coinage was at least somewhat regular, owing to the wide variety of dies found among the examples of the hoard.
