Description

Hound At Bay

MYSIA. Cyzicus. Ca. 500-450 BC. EL stater (20mm, 16.10 gm). Hound crouching left, fore-paw raised, tunny fish below / Quadripartite incuse square. Von Fritze 93, pl. III, 12. Boston 1469. SNG von Aulock 119. Edge cracks, light N graffito below neck, otherwise an intriguing type and a nicely modeled hound. NGC AU 4/5 - 3/5, light graffito.

By the evidence of coinage, some modern canine breeds have parallels many centuries ago in early classical Greece. The hound on this coin, with its muscled body and triangular snout, closely resembles the bull terrier, although the modern breed was supposedly created in the 18th-19th centuries.
