Description

1662 Oak Tree Twopence, MS61
Small 2, Rare Noe 31.5 Subvariety

1662 2PENCE Oak Tree Twopence, Small 2, MS61 NGC. Noe 31.5, Salmon 1-A, R.4. 11.9 gn. Die alignment: 345°. While the original slate-gray toning and bold strike make this an attractive choice for the collector looking for an example of the type, the unusual subvariety makes it of significant interest to the specialist collector as well. The Noe 31.5 was first published by Eric P. Newman in The Secret of the Good Samaritan Shilling (1959). A reverse die crack running across the crudely recut numerals makes the date appear to read 1672. Michael Hodder had only recorded four of these when he cataloged the 2002 Hain Family sale (where he called it R.7), and this is substantially nicer than the Very Fine example in the Kendall Collection. Census (for the major variety): 2 in 61, 9 finer (11/17). Listed on page 40 of the 2018 Guide Book.
