Description
Intricately Detailed 16th Century Gold Pound
Elizabeth I (1558-1603) gold Pound ND (1594-1596) MS61 NGC,
Tower mint, Woolpack mm, Sixth issue, S-2534, N-2008, Fr-214.
11.04gm. A broad gold type memorable for Elizabeth's elaborate
dress and particularly lavish hair display. The specimen on offer
here has been bestowed a Mint State designation by NGC, a difficult
feat for one of the larger gold emissions of the Queen's reign, not
particularly thick either, that was prone to handling and/or
damage. As those familiar with hammered coinage know, the numerical
assignment on such pieces is not always the be-all and end-all, but
the present piece is supported by a thorough rendering of the
Queen's portrait, perhaps just a touch of softness at her back
shoulder and some doubling in the crown. An iconic and coveted
issue from the late period of the English Renaissance, seldom
available in such fine shape. From the Eternal Collection, Part III
