Fabulous Triple Unite With Renowned Provenance

Charles I gold Triple Unite 1642 AU53 PCGS, Oxford mint, S-2724, North-2381, Brooker-832, Fr-258. 27.06gm. Obv. (plumes) CAROLVS D G MAG BRIT FRAN ET HI REX crowned and armored bust left, holding sword and branch; plumes to right. Rev. EXVRGAT DEVS DISSIPENTVR INIMICI, the Declaration, in three lines: RELIG PROT LEG ANG LIBER PAR; above, III (mark of value) below three plumes; date below. Five pellets in left legend. A trophy from the English Civil War that proclaims the king's allegiance to Protestantism, the laws of England, and the liberty of Parliament. Further legitimizing Charles's claim to the throne was the sheer heft of the coin, then the largest gold type to date issued in England. Displaying very little weakness and a clear view onto the entirety of the motifs and legends, this already special piece merits a premium bid due to its clarity and beauty. Adding intrigue here is the remarkable provenance of the piece, which traces to one of the most famous English collections started in the 1600s, almost contemporary to the coin's minting. Later in the 17th century, John Egerton, the second Earl of Bridgewater, assimilated this piece into his famous Bridgewater House Collection, which he largely completed in 1740. Kept in Egerton's family through successive Earls of Bridgewater until the collection was auctioned by Sotheby's in June of 1972, the coin then changed hands again at auction with Dix Noonan Webb in September 2013.
