Description

1796 S-119 Cent, MS64 Brown
Nichols Find Variety
Noyes 1991 and 2007 Plate Coin

1796 1C Reverse of 1797, S-119, B-40, R.3, MS64 Brown PCGS. CAC. Breen Die State II. Light clash marks appear on the obverse. This variety is always seen with die cracks to the left and right from the date. We know that the 1796 S-119 was actually struck in 1797 as the reverse die also appears on 1797 S-123, but in an earlier die state. The PCGS holder incorrectly states that the coin has a Reverse of 1794.

The Nichols Find consisted of Mint State 1796 and 1797 cents, including S-119, 123, and 135, and possibly a small number of other varieties. Numismatic tradition tells us that Benjamin Goodhue obtained the coins, possibly as many as 1,000, from the Mint just after they were struck, and that, according to Dr. Sheldon in Penny Whimsy, "David Nichols of Gallows Hill, near Salem, passed them out at face value."

A lovely light brown example with satin surfaces and full cartwheel luster. The strike is bold with strong hair and drapery on the obverse and considerable leaf venation on the reverse. This is one of five coins that Del Bland grades MS61 and singles out "among the better examples seen." Bill Noyes graded this piece MS60+ in 1991 and revised his grade to AU55 in 2005 and 2007.
