1799/8 1C Overdate -- Obverse Repaired -- NGC Details. AU.
S-188, B-2, R.4. MRB VF30. Breen Die State II, with light
obverse and reverse clash marks. There is almost universal
agreement among early copper specialists that 1799 is the most
famous date of all large cents, thanks in part to early publicity
from 19th century collector Joseph Mickley, who, it is said, spent
considerable effort attempting to locate an example as
representative of his birth year. Although Mint records show a
total production of over 900,000 large cents in 1799, it is known
that the true mintage of cents bearing the 1799 date was much
smaller. However, the true mintage is unknown, and any suggested
figures are mere guesswork. Today, we know of just three die
varieties, two with a 1799/8 overdate obverse, and the third from a
normal date obverse. In all grades, approximately 200 overdate
cents and 700 normal date cents are known, almost always in the
lower grades.The surfaces are deep green-black with a glossy obverse and lightly corroded reverse. This piece has the sharpness of a strong XF specimen (AU according to NGC) with a slight flaw at the base of the neck that shows evidence of repair. The reverse shows minor corrosion, consistent with most surviving specimens. This piece was graded VF35 in the Halpern catalog. Del Bland grades this coin VF25 and tied for fifth finest known. While we disagree with his grade, Bill Noyes calls this example net Fine 15 and ninth finest known. This cent is most famous for its provenance.
A New York City restaurant and bar owner, Herman Halpern began collecting coins about 1950 after discovering a Gem 1891 Indian cent in his cash receipts. That was enough to begin collecting, and since that time he has formed world-class collections in many numismatic areas, including large cents, with his main collection offered by Stack's in 1987 and 1988. His large cents came from a variety of sources, including Norman Stack, Harold Bareford, Del Bland, and C. Douglas Smith. Halpern retired from business in 1990 and has expanded his collecting to include U.S. medals and postage stamps. A veteran of the Navy, Halpern served as a salvage diver in the South Pacific during the latter half of World War II.
