Description
1800 S-197, B-12 Cent
MS64 Red and Brown
Important Provenance
1800 1C S-197, B-12, R.1, MS64 Red and Brown PCGS. Ex: D.
Brent Pogue Collection. Breen Die State III. Die chips within the
first 0 and below the second 0 in the date give the first 0 the
appearance of an uppercase Q and provided the "Q Variety" name for
the die marriage. Additional die chips are evident at the B in
LIBERTY. Breen describes "nearly horizontal cracks" on the obverse
that may be remnants of die engraving instead of die cracks. This
important piece is the finest known S-197 cent and one of few 1800
large cents that retain ample original mint red. The olive-brown
surfaces exhibit delicate blue overtones. Past issues of
Penny-Wise share details of the 1959 Holland sale, and
Dorothy Paschal's opinion of Louis Helfenstein whom she did not
consider a true collector.Ex: Thomas L. Elder (7/1945); Leonard M. Holland (Pennypacker Auction Centre, 5/1959); Louis Helfenstein (Lester Merkin, 8/1964), lot 18; Elvin I.
