St. Petersburg mint. Each specimen from this highly engaging set is a veritable highlight of the 19th century Russian Pattern series, with pieces coming to market quite sparingly, and even more infrequently lacking mintmarks as confirmed by a paucity of this type in auction records. Here on offer is a historic set, presumably the last of which having sold as such at the 1913 Hess sale of Leo Tolstoy. Particularly fine appearances abound these wonderful copper issues, each broadcasting wildly flashy fields punctuated with mottled magenta and lavender which are bereft of any instances of handling that could be considered distracting by even the
most seasoned and conditionally discriminating collector.
