Description

1926-S Buffalo Nickel, MS64
Low-Mintage San Francisco Date

1926-S 5C MS64 NGC. The 1926-S is the only issue in the Buffalo nickel series with a mintage below 1 million pieces (970,000 coins). This Choice Uncirculated example displays natural satiny golden-gray patina, with smooth surfaces and no individually notable marks or abrasions. Moderate central strike softness is typical of this mid-1920s branch mint issue, although this near-Gem is sharper than many similarly graded examples. Widely spaced and overused dies limit the technical grade of many 1926-S nickels. This example is housed in an old Generation 4 fatty holder that retains its full, undamaged hologram. NGC reports only 15 finer examples plus four pieces in 64+ and a single 64 coin (6/25).(Registry values: N4719)
