Description

1792 Washington Getz Cent, XF Details
Copper, Small Eagle, Ornamental Edge
Baker-25D, Only 11 Known

1792 Washington Getz Pattern Cent, Small Eagle, Copper, Ornamental Edge -- Environmental Damage -- PCGS Genuine. XF Details. Baker-25D, W-10785, GW-22, Low R.7. 160.4 grains. 35.2 mm. In 1792, Lancaster, Pennsylvania resident Peter Getz designed a private pattern cent or half dollar with types copied from the 1791 Baker-16 Small Eagle cents. However, President Washington believed that placing the sitting President on coinage was monarchial. The Getz design was struck in both silver and copper, with two edge types. More than 40 plain edge copper pieces are known, in two different diameters, while only 11 are confirmed with an ornamental (circles and squares) edge, similar to that seen on the Spanish-American silver then in American circulation. Of those 11 examples, nearly half are held by museums. This is a well-defined and unmarked specimen with evenly microgranular powder-blue and stone-gray surfaces. Listed on page 39 of the 2026 Guide Book.
