Description

1793 C-1 Half Cent, AU53
Ex: Clapp, Eliasberg
Likely In The Top 10 Finest

1793 1/2 C Bent Cap, C-1, B-1, High R.3, AU53 PCGS. Ex: Eliasberg. A lovely woodgrain texture contains mahogany and steel-gray hues over a well-detailed design. A couple of old marks in front of the face allow for provenance identification. The margins outside the beaded border are extremely wide.

This wonderful half cent was once pedigreed to the Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. collection, as noted on the PCGS holder. The description in that sale revealed that Eliasberg had purchased the coin from the estate of John H. Clapp in 1942, likely in the sale of his well-known collection of gold coins. This provides a wonderful connection to two of the 20th Century's most important numismatists.

The Eliasberg catalog also places the coin as "certainly among the top 10 known for the variety." Its EAC grade in the sale was EF-45, with a sharpness grade of AU50. Breen called it Extremely Fine in his half cent encyclopedia. Taking either grade, or its PCGS grade of AU53, it is still one of the finest examples of this important issue from the first year of American coinage.
Ex: John H. Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. (7/1942); The Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., Collection (Bowers & Merena, 5/1996), lot 393.
