Description

Elusive 1909 VDB Cent, PR64 Red and Brown

1909 1C VDB PR64 Red and Brown PCGS. This boldly defined Lincoln has exquisite matte proof surfaces with nearly full original red luster, mellowed to reddish-brown and deeper brown on each side. A few minuscule spots are evident on each side, preventing a higher grade. Close inspection reveals the distinctive "wood-grain" appearance that is often associated with the various 1909 cent varieties.
As the first Lincoln cent, and a short-lived variety with initials on the reverse, this 1909 VDB is an important rarity in proof format, with a mintage of just 1,194 coins. Perhaps half of those survive today.
