Description

(1863) Bar Copper, Bolen Copy, Unc Details
Attractive, Well-Made Restrike Issue

(1863) 1C Bar Copper, Bolen Copy -- Bent -- Genuine PCGS. Unc Details. Musante JAB-2, W-14200, R.5. Bolen dies 1-A. John Bolen was a diesinker and numismatist from Springfield, Massachusetts; originally from New York. He was evidently a talented maker of copy dies, and today his creations are highly collectible. The current offering represents a facsimile of the circa 1785 Bar Copper. On Bolen's restrike, the S in USA passes over the A, rather than the other way around as on the originals. This piece is well-struck and free of surface disturbances or abrasions, with deep toning that combines shades of red-brown, lavender, violet, and peach. The planchet is slightly bent, as noted by PCGS.
