Description

1796 Half Cent, MS65 Brown
Dr. Francis Edwards Copy

1796 1/2 C Edwards Copy MS65 Brown PCGS. The Edwards copies are attributed to Dr. Francis Smith Edwards, an advanced collector who was active in the middle 19th century. He was born in Norwich, England on June 2, 1826, and died the day before his 39th birthday in 1865. Following military service during the Mexican War, Edwards was an 1854 graduate of the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. He was a New York City physician who died after contracting typhoid fever from a patient whom he was treating. Just over a decade later, in 1876, Emmanuel Attinelli wrote of Dr. Edwards: "To him was attributed the appearance of several counterfeit pieces of rare American coins and medals, which, though extremely well executed, were quickly detected."

Traces of original red remain on this sharply detailed, problem-free olive-brown Gem that exhibits splashes of turquoise toning. Trivial spots at the lower right reverse will identify this specific example. Nine submissions of the 1796 Edwards Copy have passed through the PCGS grading room, including two examples certified as MS67 Red and Brown, two graded MS66 Brown, this MS65 Brown, and two lower grade examples (7/25).
