Description

1794 Flowing Hair Half Dollar, VF25
Popular O-101, T-7 Variety

1794 50C O-101, T-7, High R.3, VF25 NGC. Tompkins Die State 1/3, with a die crack extending from the rim, through the F in OF, to the leaf below. The first delivery of half dollars at the Philadelphia Mint, comprising 5,300 pieces, took place on December 1, 1794. The second delivery (18,164 pieces) did not take place until February 4, 1795, but most, or all, of those coins were probably dated 1794. Eleven die varieties are known for the date. This coin represents the popular O-101, T-7 variety, with star 15 pointing below the point of the bust and the berries arranged in a 10x11 arrangement on the reverse. The T-7 is a reasonably available variety, and a popular choice of first-year type collectors.

This impressive VF25 specimen retains much interior detail in Liberty's hair, and all lettering and the date are bold. The lavender-gray surfaces yield to shades of steel-blue at the peripheries, with hints of pale gold and amber on the reverse. The design elements are well-centered, with complete dentilation around both sides. Traces of original mint luster cling to protected areas. The overall presentation is most attractive for this important first-year issue.
