1916 Standing Liberty Quarter
MS66 Full Head
Simply Stunning Luster

1916 25C MS66 Full Head NGC. The 1916 Standing Liberty quarter is well-known among casual collectors as one of the prominent key issues in the series, though many specialists also categorize the date as a notable one-year type coin. The design differences between the 1916 and the Type One 1917 issues are minor, but are more numerous than just differences in striking sharpness. Among other variances, differences in the gown folds are immediately obvious on high-grade coins, and Liberty's toe on her right (facing) foot is noticeably larger on the 1916 issue than it is on the 1917 Type One. The reed and bead around the obverse border is also a prominent difference; it is complete on the 1917 issue, but is broken at the top of Liberty's head on the 1916. The latter is the most widely known design difference, as it is distinguishable even on very low-grade or dateless coins.

Whether acquiring an example for type or for date purposes, the 1916 Standing Liberty quarter is usually one of the "stoppers" to a complete set, but pleasing, high-grade examples such as the coin offered here are sometimes available to the patient specialist. Sharp definition is immediately apparent, but it is the radiant original luster that captivates the most, especially on the near-brilliant reverse. The obverse displays original golden and russet toning. Neither side has mentionable abrasions. Among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins.(Registry values: N7079)
