Description

1851 Cent, Good Details
Extremely Rare N-44, FS-302

1851 1C N-44, FS-302, R.7 -- Damage -- PCGS Genuine. Good Details. The "Pillowed Die" variety. Apparently, the dies were improperly annealed, and promptly sank as coinage began, likely the reason for the extreme rarity of the die pairing. Specific repunching on the uprights of the 1s in the date is also diagnostic. The medium brown surfaces are occasionally microgranular, and a retained lamination is below the C in CENT. Included with the lot is a J.R. Grellman card, dated 9/26/1994, which describes the present cent as "nicks + flattened slightly, 8+/5." Our EAC grade Good 5.
Ex: American Gold and Silver, Plaistow, NH, 9/1994; Joe D'Agostino; Crescent Bay Rarities Collection (Superior, 2/2007), lot 254.
