Description
Major Armenian Rarity
Cilician Armenia. Gosdantin I 2 Tram ND (1298-1299) MS61
NGC, Leon A. Saryan: "An Unpublished Silver Double Tram of
Gosdantin I (1298-1299), King of Armenia" AJN (American Journal of
Numismatics) 12 (2000), pp. 195-204 and pl. 26 var. 5.80gm. An
exorbitantly rare Double Tram by Gosdantin I, one of Levon II's
four sons who fought amongst each other for power in the decade
following Levon's death. Gosdantin ruled for only a single year and
the coinage produced in his name is rare. This piece, however, is
not just a standard coin issue; the rarity of this Double Tram is
so great it is assumed this issue was ceremonial in purpose.
Heritage has never handled an example of the type until now, and
this piece is the sole occupant on the NGC census. We anticipate
the bidding battle for this offering among Armenian specialists
will be fierce.Metal: Silver
Diameter: 27mm
Estimate: $15,000 - $20,000.
