Description
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar, AU55
B-1, BB-21, with Silver Plug
Rare At This Grade
1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Two Leaves, Silver Plug, B-1, BB-21, R.2,
AU55 NGC. The B-1, BB-21 variety is one of several 1795 Flowing
Hair die pairs known on rare occasions to have a silver plug
inserted to adjust the planchet weight. This Two Leaves die pair is
most easily distinguished by the 7 in the date punched over a 1.
The partial outline of a large, circular plug is mostly hidden in
Liberty's hair strands, but it is clearly outlined when the obverse
is viewed under magnification. Enlarged images reveal the curve of
the Mint-inserted plug, although the coin's bold strike conceals
the plug on the reverse. At times, the silver plug is present but
it is not all that apparent. Sometimes a plug is a different color
than the host planchet, suggesting that they were struck from a
different batch of silver -- with slightly different composition --
allowing the plug to tone differently than the host coin.In the past, some researchers thought these plugs were an attempt to alter the silver fineness of the dollar. Further study in recent years indicates that the plugs were inserted solely to increase the weight of an underweight planchet. The process of melting, refining, rolling, and punching planchets in 1795 was tedious and time-consuming. Overweight planchets could be filed to adjust their weight, but underweight planchets either needed to be destroyed or have weight added. Inserting a silver plug into the center of the planchet was a viable solution to the underweight planchet problem.
This Choice About Uncirculated example is a splendid Flowing Hair dollar even if it didn't have the highly desirable plug feature. The surfaces are remarkably unmarked and attractive, with minimal smooth wear over the highpoints. The fields and recesses display rich, lilac-gray toning that deepens slightly at the borders. A pair of small, deep-gray accents are noted on the reverse. It will be a challenge to find a finer silver plug example given the strong collector demand and scarcity for this interesting Mint anomaly. NGC Census: 1 in 55, 1 finer (12/25).
