Description

A Remarkable Triple Unite

Charles I gold Triple Unite 1642 XF45 NGC, Oxford mint, Plume mm, S-2724, North-2381 (VR), Schneider-286 (same dies), SCBI 33 JGB-832 (same dies). Tall narrow bust left holding sword and olive branch, a plume in the field behind / Declaration between three wavy lines, denomination and plumes above, date below. A charming example of this massive gold issue of the English Civil War with minimal circulation wear and significant residual luster. The overall quality of the strike is impressive, with numerous, small die cracks and cuds visible throughout which assist with attribution to the die pairings noted in Schneider and JGB (B-J III/S2). Highly appealing and very rare this fine.
Ex. PH Ward, Stack's, 30 April 1964; Greta Heckett, Sotheby's, May 1977; Mark Rasmussen, List 9, 2006 (132); Mark Rasmussen, List 15, Spring 2008 (59).
