Description

1795 Flowing Hair Dollar, AU53
B-5, BB-27, Three Leaves
Popular Early Type Coin

1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Three Leaves, B-5, BB-27, R.1, AU53 PCGS. Bowers Die State III, as often seen, with a die line from the branch stem to the rim. The 1795 BB-27 dollar is an essential type coin, by far the most collectible Flowing Hair dollar variety, and one of the few that is accessible in high grades. Bowers writes:

"Due to the depth of the Miss Liberty portrait in the die, the resultant coins were in high relief. ... On some (but not all) higher grade coins, usually Die State III in EF or finer preservation, the hair detail a the center of the obverse and the eagle's breast feathers are well defined."

This AU53 dollar features good detail on the upper and lower curls, though typical blending occurs over the middle of the high-relief portrait and the eagle's breast. The legends and other border elements are fully struck. Wear is trivial, and each side exhibits pleasing silver-gray patina with golden accents. Surprisingly clean for the grade.
