Description
1867 Seated Half, PR67 Ultra Cameo
Tied for Finest Certified
1867 50C PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC. The 625-piece 1867 proof
mintage yields only a handful of Superb Gem proofs regardless of
the designated Cameo contrast level. At the Deep or Ultra Cameo
category, only two pieces achieve the PR67 numeric grade. Both of
those coins are NGC-certified, while PCGS reports a single PR66
Deep Cameo coin as its finest example. A strong case can be made
for the present coin being the finest proof 1867 half dollar that
exists today. It certainly displays the most spectacular contrast,
with richly frosted white-as-snow motifs set against glassy silver
fields that are fully brilliant and deeply mirrored. A
pinpoint-sharp proof strike exists throughout the obverse and the
reverse. The other PR67 Ultra Cameo coin at NGC is in itself a
magnificent example -- technically equivalent to be sure, but toned
and therefore not as flashy as this brilliant white-on-black coin.
Seated half dollar proof specialists are encouraged to take note
and bid accordingly. NGC Census: 2 in 67 Ultra Cameo, 0 finer
