Description
1850-O Seated Dollar, MS64
Rarely Encountered in Mint Condition
1850-O $1 OC-1, R.2, MS64 NGC. Osburn-Cushing Die State b/b.
Branch mint Seated dollars are a specialty unto themselves. Only
four different dates were coined at the New Orleans Mint, and these
were produced in 1846, 1850, 1859, and 1860. Of this brief series,
the 1850-O issue has the lowest mintage with just 40,000 coins
struck. Years ago, Dave Bowers summed it up nicely in his Silver
Dollar Encyclopedia,: "If you want a Mint State 1850-O dollar
for your collection, I suggest that you compromise and acquire an
EF or AU instead, at least as an interim strategy, for it may be
years, if ever, until you can buy a nice Mint State coin. Examples
are few and far between."This near-Gem Uncirculated example offers one of those rare opportunities. It is attractively toned and displays satiny luster throughout shallowly mirrored, semiprooflike fields. A sharp strike exists throughout the obverse, while the reverse is bold except at the eagle's neck feathers, which lack full definition. The surfaces on both sides display light-gold toning that deepens slightly on the obverse periphery, adding bits of grayish-blue patina. Just a few tiny abrasions are scattered across the surfaces, and perhaps it is these minuscule marks that keep this coin from an even finer grade. As it is, the present example is one of the finest 1850-O Seated dollars currently known. Neither PCGS nor NGC report any in higher grades. NGC Census: 4 in 64, 0 finer (4/25).
