Description

1863 1C MS66 PCGS. The copper-nickel composition provided a host of planchet variations in color and receptiveness to toning, for which there is no more obvious example than an 1863 "white cent," which appears more nickel than copper in coloration. This is such a coin, doubly scarce in Premium Gem for its high numeric grade as well as its silvery patina. Sharply struck with lustrous, satin-smooth surfaces, this Mint-fresh cent shows iridescent wisps of golden hues on the obverse and ivory tones with orange-gold highlights on the reverse. No 1863 cent is graded numerically finer at PCGS. Population: 45 in 66 (2 in 66+), 0 finer (2/15).(Registry values: N2998)
