Description

1842 Quarter Eagle, AU58
An Overlooked Absolute and Condition Rarity

1842 $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. The 1842 is an underrated early Philadelphia issue in the Coronet series with a meager mintage of only 2,823 pieces. In addition to an absolute rarity it is also a condition rarity. NGC has only certified four other pieces AU58 with one finer (5/21). The enormous holdings of Harry Bass' gold coins had multiples of most issues, but only one 1842 quarter eagle. This is a pleasing example with only the slightest signs of contact. Slightly soft definition is seen in the centers with a better strike around the margins.(Registry values: P2)
